After handling their opponents in their first games, the Virginia Cavaliers and the Mississippi State Bulldogs are ready to play each other in the College World Series.

Following Mississippi State’s win over the Texas Longhorns, the Bulldogs are now set to face off against a Virginia Cavaliers team who did what MSU couldn’t: beat Tennessee.

On Sunday, Virginia handled Tennessee, beating the Vols 6-0. Mississippi State didn’t have that sort of luck when it faced the Vols in the SEC Tournament, a game in which the Bulldogs lost 12-2. Of course, that was back in May and Mississippi State is proving that the SEC Tournament really doesn’t matter all that much. At least it doesn’t right now.

The Bulldogs are fresh off of a 2-1 win over Texas, a game in which MSU’s Will Bednar struck out 15 batters and Landon Sims struck out another six, combining for a CWS single game record of 21 strikeouts.

Virginia will be looking to prove that it can fare better against the Bulldogs than the Longhorns did. The Cavaliers had no issue beating one great SEC team when they beat the Vols by half a dozen runs. The Bulldogs will present a bit of a different challenge though as MSU has a pretty solid pitching staff.

Whoever loses between Mississippi State and Virginia will have to face the winner of Tennessee and Texas (the loser between the Vols and Longhorns will be the second team eliminated from the 2021 College World Series).

Of course, whoever wins between the Bulldogs and Cavaliers will get to rest a bit. Winning this game is huge and can provide a definitive advantage as everybody starts to wear down a little this late into the NCAA Baseball Tournament.

Mississippi State and Virginia are looking to jump in the driver’s seat on their side of the bracket. The Bulldogs and Cavaliers will play tonight at 6 p.m. on ESPN2.
