Aaron Rodgers isn’t the only Packers star with contract issues
The Packers have a lot of contract issues to deal with this offseason. Aaron Rodgers may be their first priority but Davante Adams can’t be far behind.
Packers fans are well acquainted with the soap opera the team is undergoing with Aaron Rodgers this offseason. The Hall-of-Fame quarterback isn’t the only Green Bay superstar with contract issues this summer though. Davante Adams isn’t overjoyed with his current pact either.
When asked by Fox Sports about any developments regarding his own contract situation, Adams simply replied that there wasn’t anything “worth mentioning” at the moment. He did note that he’s keeping a close eye on what happens with his star quarterback, but he also fell well short of saying that his future in Green Bay is in any way tied to Rodgers.
Adams still has one year remaining on the four-year, $58 million extension he signed in December of 2017. He’s outperformed that deal by producing like an All-Pro despite the lack of quality around him in the Packer’s receiving room. It’s understandable that the 28-year-old wideout is looking for a new long-term deal as he enters the tail end of his prime.
What will the Packers do about Davante Adams?
The short answer is that Green Bay’s front office isn’t going to do anything of note with Adams before they clarify what’s going on with Rodgers. It may seem unfair, but Adams’ future with the Packers is going to be tied to his veteran quarterback.
If Rodgers does defy the odds and leave Green Bay in the near future, then it’s easy to envision a scenario where GM Brian Gutekunst and the Packers’ front office lean into a significant rebuild. Trading Adams as he enters the last year of his deal could do a lot to help reshape the team’s roster. An infusion of talent will be required to adjust to life without Rodgers.
If Rodgers does return to Green Bay on a long-term deal then it becomes imperative for the team’s front office to lock up Adams as well. This team can ill afford to lose talent at the wide receiver position. Even if Adams does start to experience some age-related regression in the coming seasons he still projects as a borderline star playing alongside Rodgers.
The good news for Packers fans is that Adams doesn’t seem to be pushing the front office for a new deal before Rodgers’ future is clarified. His patience is a big win for a franchise that cannot afford any additional drama at the moment. Green Bay fans should keep their fingers crossed that their star wide receiver remains content to wait patiently in the background.
