Cleveland Cavaliers: 3 ways to best use No. 3 overall pick in 2021 NBA Draft
The Cleveland Cavaliers NBA Draft plans for the No. 3 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft give the front office plenty of attractive options to build the roster.
Cleveland Cavaliers fans have to be used to this feeling by now, as they endured another grueling season to the tune of a 22-50 record. However, things aren’t all bad in Cleveland. The team learned that they would have the third overall pick in the upcoming NBA draft. That pick leaves that Cavs with a bevy of options to choose from — who should they select, should they select anyone at and just trade the pick? If they trade the pick, who would they get for it?
There are so many ways Cleveland can go with this selection; it can almost be mind-numbing. To make things simple, here are the three ways the team can best utilize their premium draft pick.
Cleveland Cavaliers NBA Draft plans: Trade No. 3 pick for Ben Simmons
Since LeBron James left Cleveland a second time, the Cavs have failed to find another player with even half of the star power he has. However, that can change if the team decides to part ways with the No. 3 pick. One player could be on the market who could benefit from a change of scenery — Ben Simmons.
The Philadelphia 76ers star is coming off a horrid playoff outing. His offensive woes have many thinking his time in Philly is over. If that’s the case, Cleveland should consider trading the No. 3 (and anything the Sixers might ask for) in exchange for the 6-foot-10 point forward. His size and playmaking could help out a Cavs team who desperately needs it.
The Cavs’ offense didn’t score or pass enough to be successful, ranking in the bottom third of the league in both points scored and assists. Although Simmons won’t help much in the scoring department (for now), he can definitely improve those assists. Even if Cleveland doesn’t want Simmons, they can still use the No. 3 pick to trade for another quality player.
But given his plummeting trade value, it’d be best for the Cavs to explore acquiring Simmons first, as he can help quicken the rebuilding process and bring some needed star power to Cleveland.
