Max Scherzer would headline the Cubs rotation, but will cost a ton to trade for

Even if they play in the same league, Chicago could theoretically trade for Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer. Of course, doing so would cost the Cubs a ton, and it would probably only be for a half-season rental. However, Scherzer is the transformative pitcher that can elevate the entire Cubs rotation and turn the team from a postseason hopeful to a serious World Series contender.

Though Washington has played better of late, the Nationals may not have what it takes to catch the New York Mets in the NL East race. Because Scherzer is an impending free agent, it might serve the Nationals to trade him for blue-chip prospects and hope he re-ups with them on a new contract. Since this feels like the last season of the Cubs’ championship window, why not go all-in?

Yes, the farm system will be depleted, but the Cubs would get a frontline ace who can carry Chicago to its second World Series championship of our lifetimes. Though the chances of getting him to re-sign in his free agency this offseason are slim, you have to take advantage when your championship window is open. Otherwise, he could be traded to the arch rival St. Louis Cardinals.

Trading for Scherzer may have great upside, but doing so will compromise the Cubs’ overall future.
