3 Yankees trades that could blow up the trade deadline
By Scott Rogust
Remember earlier in the season where the Yankees traded away Mike Tauchman because they had too many outfielders on the roster? Well that move backfired spectacularly due to the injuries and lack of production from players on the depth chart. If one thing was obvious thus far, it is that the Yankees desperately need a center fielder after Aaron Hicks suffered a season-ending wrist injury.
The Yankees can fill the void at center field by acquiring Ketel Marte of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Marte has been solid throughout his time in Arizona but has been bitten by the injury bug at points. That was evident as he is currently day-to-day with hamstring tightness. But when he is at full health, Marte provides an impact bat in the order.
Through 36 games, Marte is slashing .366/.415/.552 while recording four home runs, 21 RBI, 24 runs scored and 49 hits. Overall, the utility man has recorded a .296 batting average, a.851 OPS, 57 home runs, 207 RBI, 238 runs scored and 481 hits in his five years with the team.
While the Diamondbacks may not want to trade Marte, they may have no choice. The team is currently sitting dead-last in the National League and the lowly Pirates have seven more wins than them as of this writing. Given that there are teams likely willing to pay a heavy price in terms of talent and prospects for Marte, the Diamondbacks would be wise to consider giving the proverbial thumbs up.
For the Yankees, Marte is on an affordable deal until the end of the 2022 season, where he has club options in 2023 ($10 million) and 2024 ($12 million), according to Spotrac. If they want to fix their problems in center field, they should give Arizona a call.
