3 reasons Georgia won’t win the national championship this year
The Georgia Bulldogs have plenty of hope coming into the 2021 season, but they have huge hurdles that will keep them from a championship.
Georgia has been on the cusp of something special for a while now. Is this the year they break through and grab their first national championship since 1980?
They have a strong defense and an offense that could provide what has been missing all along.
Even so, there are cracks in the facade that make it clear the Bulldogs aren’t going to get across the ultimate finish line.
3. JT Daniels is far from proven
JT Daniels is a caliber above the quarterback talent Georgia has been used to. That much is clear. Is he a national title-winning quarterback? That’s still a huge doubt.
The USC transfer showed real promise in his four appearances in 2020, throwing for 1,231 yards and 10 touchdowns. He rightly got the hearts of Bulldog fans pumping and he’s kept them going with fireworks in the Spring Game.
Daniels has some flaws, though, and they’re the kind that often keep teams from getting over the hump. As a freshman at USC, he lost his cool in critical moments. His desperation, try-to-do-it-all throws were a source of frustration. He lacked the poise that differentiates the best from the rest.
He’s also not mobile, which could be a limiting factor for the Bulldog offense. While Clemson’s D.J. Uiagalelei and Alabama’s Bryce Young are capable of extending plays, Daniels has to take what he gets from inside the pocket, especially coming off a torn ACL.
Daniels probably has what it takes to get Georgia to the College Football Playoff. Winning it is another story.
