3 Detroit Lions who won’t be on the roster by Week 1
1. Detroit Lions roster cut: Geronimo Allison
After four seasons with the Green Bay Packers, Allison signed a one-year deal with the Lions in 2020. But he opted out of the season, so he has yet to take the field for his new team in a game. And the way it’s looking, he won’t ever be in a Lions’ uniform for a meaningful game.
By circumstance or their own motivation, the Lions turned overturned the wide receiver group this offseason. Kenny Golladay (Giants), Marvin Jones (Jaguars) and Danny Amendola (unsigned) are gone, replaced by Tyrell Williams, Breshad Perriman and rookie Amon-Ra St. Brown. Undrafted rookie Sage Surratt and second-year man Quintez Cephus are interesting young players there should be a place for on a rebuilding team.
Young and interesting are two adjectives that don’t belong next to Allison’s name. He never got to 350 yards in a season with a role open in Green Bay and Aaron Rodgers mostly the one throwing him the ball. Now he’s coming off sitting out a season, with at least five receivers lined up ahead of him for a roster spot in Detroit.
Allison may get a shot somewhere this year. But the Lions should have little use for him as anything other than preseason game fodder, and even then they can get a look at players they’re far more likely to keep around.
