9. Courtney Brown, defensive end, Penn State

Known as “The Quiet Storm,” defensive end Courtney Brown was a physical marvel. Brown ran a 4.52 40-yard dash at 6-foot-4 and 285 pounds. In addition to a productive career at Penn State, those numbers led the Browns to select Brown as the first overall pick in the 2000 NFL Draft.

Brown was the first defensive lineman selected first overall in league history. Injuries would plague the South Carolina native his entire career and contribute to the lack of on-field production.

As a rookie, Brown had a solid season with 69 total tackles and 4.5 sacks. Unfortunately for him and the Browns, that would be the only season Brown played an entire season. Injuries began in year two and would not stop until he was out of the league in 2005.

Brown’s best season was 2003. That season, he played 14 games and registered six sacks, a career-best. 2005 was Brown’s final season in the NFL with the Denver Broncos.

Though Brown did not live up to the lofty expectations of a number one overall pick, he was arguably the best defensive end in Penn State Nittany Lions history. Brown was a consensus All-American, Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, and All-Big Ten First-Team in 1999.

When Brown’s Penn State career was over, he had the NCAA record for career sacks (33) and tackles for loss (70).
