Change could be coming to the Yankees front office and general manager Brian Cashman needs to figure out a solution soon.

Given the expectations that come with 27 championships, it’s been a disappointing season for the Yankees thus far. The Bronx Bombers just got swept by the Red Sox and they’re now 7.5 games out of first place, and five games behind a Wild Card spot.

Yankees fans will probably be the first tell you they stink, but to hear it said from General Manager Brian Cashman just hits different.

“It stinks to the high heavens.” It sure does, especially when you’re underperforming while holding the second-highest payroll in the majors. Still, you don’t need to tell Yankees players and personnel they stink right now, obviously they know it.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman didn’t hold back on his recent comments

The job of a major-league GM is to put the best product on the field possible, which Cashman clearly hasn’t done up to this point. Hopefully Cashman is looking himself in the mirror and telling himself how bad he stinks too, as opposed to publicly criticizing the team with a comment like that. Maybe it’s an effort to light a fire under this underperforming team, but today’s professional athlete usually doesn’t take too well when the criticism is coming from outside the clubhouse on a public forum.

The good news is the Yankees are coming off a nice 11-5 bounce-back win over the Angels which snapped a four-game losing streak. The question now is whether or not New York can sustain winning to at least ride high into the All-Star Break.

It’ll be difficult to catch Tampa Bay and Boston on top of the division, but it’s not impossible and shouldn’t be out of the question. The same goes with clinching a Wild Card birth.

Should the team stay in their current spot or sneak a little closer to the postseason conversation, you can bet Cashman will do whatever it takes to bring in some new assets. If the Yankees fall further down the standings it might be time to shake things up, not just on the field, but in the front office as well.
