The Astros needed a bit of time to settle into the 2021 season, but after an excellent June, they’re back on top of the AL West and set up to contend for the World Series.
In the last 30 games, only the Brewers have managed more victories.
Keeping the momentum going and getting in the best position for the postseason may require some activity at the MLB trade deadline. However, there are a couple of deals to avoid.

Max Scherzer
Max Scherzer has been a hot name on the trade block all season. The 36-year-old is having a great year with the Nationals, but they may want to cash in on him with free agency approaching.
It’s well-known the Astros could use a boost to their pitching. While the existing rotation has been effective, they’ve dealt with concerning injury issues. It would also be unreasonable to expect that group to continue the unbelievable run they’ve been on over the past month.
So Houston continues to be linked to starting pitcher trades, including Scherzer.
However, trading for Scherzer doesn’t look like a good idea. Sure, any team would love to have his services. The Astros don’t have flexibility in their farm system to make Washington an offer worth either team’s while. The fact that Scherzer could just leave as a free agent after the season makes it a risk not work taking.
Plus, Houston’s more pressing issue is with relievers. Whatever assets might be spent on Scherzer would be better spent adding to the bullpen.
