The Euro 2020 brackets clearly show that the tournament has arrived at the quarterfinal stage — but the match between Italy and Belgium on Friday could very well have been the final.

In fact, two of the best teams so far in the tournament square off at the Allianz Arena in Munich, meaning one of them will be forced to endure an early exit from what is shaping up to be one of the most competitive international tournaments in years.

The Azzurri defeated Austria 2-1 this past Saturday in the round of 16, but needed extra time to grab the win. Belgium also squeezed out a win, a 1-0 result the following day against defending European champions Portugal.

Italy manager Roberto Mancini may make some changes heading into the Belgium game after super-sub Federico Chiesa put the Italians ahead in extra time before Matteo Pessina added a second.

Injured center back Giorgio Chiellini, who missed the last two games, could be back alongside his Juventus teammate Leonardo Bonucci, while striker Andrea Belotti could get the start over Ciro Immobile.

The Azzurri are riding a 31-game unbeaten streak, but in Belgium they face a formidable side. The Red Devils, the No. 1-ranked team according to FIFA, are hoping their golden generation of stars, including Romelu Lukaku and Edin Hazard, can help them win their first international trophy.

Lukaku, who plays for Inter Milan in Italy’s top flight, is well known to the Azzurri, many of whom have played against him throughout the past Serie A season. Dries Mertens, an attacking midfielder, plays for Napoli and could also find himself against club teammate Lorenzo Insigne.
