Euro 2020: Switzerland vs. Spain: Kick-off time, TV details, live stream
Spain play Switzerland on Friday in Saint Petersburg for a shot at the Euro 2020 semifinals. Here’s what to know before you tune in.
The quarterfinal round of Euro 2020 begins begin Friday with a match-up between two teams who have played some of the most exciting games at the tournament so far.
Spain and Switzerland both survived scares in the Round of 16, but soldiered on in dramatic fashion to reach the quarterfinals. They meet Friday at Saint Petersburg Stadium in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
Spain, up 3-1 on Croatia, squandered that lead this past Monday, only to win 5-3 in extra time. Switzerland did the opposite later that same day, going down 3-1 to pre-tournament favorites France, but scored twice to push the game into overtime before advancing via a penalty-kick shootout.
The Swiss, the Cinderella side at these Euros, haven’t reached the quarterfinals at a major soccer tournament since they hosted the 1954 World Cup.
“We made history tonight,” Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka told reporters after the win. “We are all very proud.”
The hero for Switzerland, goalkeeper Yann Sommer, blocked Kylian Mbappe’s kick that sent the French out of the tournament. He’ll need to do much of the same against a Spain side that has scored 10 goals in their last two matches.
Spain, meanwhile, went down early in their match against Croatia following a goalkeeping blunder by Unai Simon.
“Mistakes are part of football and, when it’s a ‘keeper, everyone notices it more,” Spain striker Mikel Oyarzabal told reporters. “Our confidence in Unai is unchanged. I’ve been involved in very few groups of players who feel as unified or as confident as this one.”
