Euro 2020: England vs Ukraine Kick-off time, TV details, live stream
England, in their quest to win a major title since 1966, face Ukraine in the quarterfinals at Euro 2020 in Rome. Here’s what you need to know.
England, favorites to win Euro 2020 after the early elimination of France, will play Ukraine at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome for a shot at the semifinals of Euro 2020.
England has had a great tournament, defeating Germany 2-0 in the Round of 16, while Ukraine reached this stage of the competition after knocking out Sweden 2-1 in extra time.
English manager Gareth Southgate has been criticized for his defensive approach, but there’s no denying that goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who has yet to concede a goal at this tournament, and the entire Three Lions backline has been wonderful.
At the same time, the attack, spearheaded by striker Harry Kane, has been solid. Ukraine will certainly have a tough time containing them.
“England are a great team, they have squad depth and outstanding coaching staff. We are fully aware of how tough this game is going to be,” Ukraine manager Andriy Shevchenko told reporters on the eve of the match. “They are incredibly difficult to score against, but their strengths shouldn’t scare us. It should motivate us because everything is possible in football as in life and we will play our hearts out to give our fans even more to cheer about.”
Ukraine, however, know how to persevere against great defending. They defeated Sweden, one of the best teams defensively at these Euros, by creating many attacking chances. It paid off when Artem Dovbyk scored the winning goal in the dying seconds of extra time.
Ukraine have outscored England 6-4 so far at this tournament, although there is a big question mark over whether captain Andriy Yarmolenko’s fitness after such a tough match against Sweden.
Southgate isn’t leaving anything to chance.
“We’ve not achieved what we want to achieve yet,” he told reporters. “I can look back on a day like today in the future but I want to get Saturday right.”
