Chad Green’s rare feat saved the Yankees from a Mets sweep

New York pitcher Chad Green came through with an immaculate inning to spare the Yankees a Subway Series sweep at the hands of the Mets.

The Yankees were in danger of hitting rock bottom against the Mets on Sunday. Then something literally immaculate happened.

In the second game of a doubleheader, Chad Green did what All-Star pitchers Gerrit Cole and Aroldis Chapman couldn’t in the first game. He closed out the Mets with three flawless innings, including an immaculate ninth inning to finish it off.

Green became just the eighth Yankee pitcher to throw an immaculate inning with three strikeouts in just nine pitches. Every pitch in the ninth inning went for a strike.

Green’s outstanding showing helped New York avoid a sweep at the hands of their rivals.

When he came into the game, the Yankees were protecting a 3-2 lead. Earlier that day, Chapman conceded a 5-4 lead with a home run in the first at-bat of the seventh inning, so fans of the Bronx Bombers had reason to be skeptical of their relievers.

The doubt was unnecessary as Green took care of things. He didn’t allow a Mets player on base for his entire stint and the Yankees pulled away for a 4-3 victory.

New York will need more performances like that to get out of their hole in the AL East. They’re 10 games behind the Red Sox while sitting in fourth place behind the Rays and Blue Jays. They had lost three straight before Sunday night’s win, with defeats in seven of their last nine.

Green is 30 years old and in his sixth season with the Yankees. While he has a 3-4 record, his ERA is 2.28 this year.
