Alvaro Morata went from hero to villain in Spain after his missed penalty helped Italy clinch a spot in the Euro final.
Morata notched a goal late in the second half to even the score, helping send the match to extra time and eventually penalties. However, when his number was called to step to the spot for penalty kicks, he failed miserably.
While a commonly-lambasted player on the Spanish side, Morata actually set a record on Tuesday night. Morata passed Fernando Torres, having scored his sixth goal in the European Championships. Morata also became only the second player to score three or more goals in two separate European Championships. He joined Cristiano Ronaldo in that elite company, who has scored three or more in three separate tournaments for Portugal.
Spain vs Italy: Alvaro Morata destroyed on Twitter for effort on penalty kick
Morata revealed that he and his family received some death threats during the group stage, as he’s been subject to immense criticism throughout the tournament. Such criticism is odd given his goal-scoring status, but that’s often what comes with the title in Spanish soccer.
After losing to Italy in part because of his missed PK, Morata was subject to much hate on social media. Don’t worry, we’ll keep it PG.

Jorginho ice cool. But I feel sorry for Spain and Morata. I hope he can recover from that.

There were many more.
Nonetheless, it was a fairly successful tournament for Spain and Morata. If anyone is to blame, perhaps it’s Spanish manager Luis Enrique for putting his team in a difficult spot.
