3 Georgia football players that must step up for Bulldogs to win the SEC
By John Buhler
The Georgia football team is counting on these three players to have breakout seasons for Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs to have a chance at winning the SEC.
If the Georgia football program wants to win the SEC for the first time since 2017, the Bulldogs need to see breakout seasons from a handful of emerging talents.
Georgia may have one of the best rosters in the Power Five, but anything short of a College Football Playoff berth this season will be viewed as a disappointment. The Dawgs should make it to their fifth straight New Year’s Six bowl in a worst-case scenario this season, but that is not good enough. For them to make the playoff, they need a handful of players to break out this year.
Here are three players who need to have breakout seasons for the Dawgs to win the SEC in 2021.

Georgia needs Jermaine Burton to be in the mix for All-SEC at wide receiver
Despite key injuries to George Pickens and Dominick Blaylock, Georgia does have a deep receiving corps. Plenty of guys got a ton of run a season ago, but no one took advantage of their bigger opportunity more than Jermaine Burton. As a freshman, Burton had 27 catches for 404 yards and three touchdowns in 10 games. Keep in mind how in flux the quarterback position was for Georgia.
Burton will get some support from Kearis Jackson and newcomer Arik Gilbert this fall, but it is hard to see the Dawgs having a successful season if Burton is not one of the better receivers in the SEC. His California connection with starting quarterback JT Daniels is paramount towards really giving this Georgia offense the flight it needs in the passing game to go out and win the SEC.
As long as he stays healthy, Burton should push for a spot on one of the all-conference teams.
