Gilberto Ramirez looked to be in top form against Sullivan Barrera. He dropped Barrera three times to force the stoppage in round 4.

For a two-year span, Gilberto Ramirez was the man at super middleweight. Then he appeared to have promotional issues with Top Rank, who chose not to renew his contract.

It was a curious circumstance for such but talented boxer as Ramirez. It was also strange that he decided to vacate his WBO title in favor of moving up to light heavyweight. Ramirez lost a lot of career momentum but gained a little of it back with an excellent performance against Sullivan Barrera on Friday, July 9.

Barrera has been a long-time contender who always comes up short in major fights, with his 2017 defeat of Joe Smith Jr. being the exception. He came into his bout with Ramirez after a loss to Jesse Hart. Unfortunately for him, he had an even worse night against Ramirez.

Gilberto Ramirez was once a highly regarded champion and showed his championship pedigree against Sullivan Barrera

Barrera was never in the fight against Ramirez. The 30-year-old southpaw broke down the older Barrera with a steady barrage of body punches. It didn’t take long for them to take effect.

Ramirez’s first knockdown of Barrera came in round 3 from a right hook to the liver. Barrera was able to make it out of that round, but he couldn’t escape round 4.

Ramirez dropped Barrera twice more with body punches. The referee and Barrera’s corner saw enough, and the fight was stopped giving Ramirez the round 4 TKO win.

Ramirez’s career has taken a few wrong turns, but he looks to be back on track. Hopefully, he can make another title run and make up for lost time and missed opportunities.
