Marcelo Mayer is expected to be the top pick in the 2021 MLB Draft.

Mayer is the best shortstop in the class, and ranked as the top player in most mock drafts (including ours). If Mayer doesn’t go to the Pittsburgh Pirates come the first round of the Draft, it’ll be a huge surprise.

The high school senior offers Pittsburgh something their system doesn’t have — a face. The Bucs are in a rebuild, and Mayer will soon be their top priority, as he should be.

The California kid has plenty to offer any team that drafts him. Here’s what MLB.com has to say in their draft profile on Mayer:

"“An 18-year-old shortstop that already possesses a big league frame, Mayer has potential five-tool talent across the board and has positioned himself alongside fellow shortstop Jordan Lawler as the top prep school position player in the country.”"

Should the Pittsburgh Pirates select Marcelo Mayer?

Mayer is the best prospect available in the 2021 Draft class, and the Pirates have the top selection. So, in short, he makes the most sense. The Bucs have so many holes and are nowhere near contention, so taking the best player available should be their only motivation.

Expect Mayer to find a home in Pittsburgh sooner rather than later.
