As they try to make a jump to the playoffs this year, these three Las Vegas Raiders won’t survive training camp cuts.
The Las Vegas Raiders have upped their win total in each year of Jon Gruden’s return as head coach, from four to seven to eight. In a certain light, as quarterback Derek Carr suggested, they were a few plays from having three or four more wins. They beat the Kansas City Chiefs once, and nearly did it a second time.
In an effort to improve a bad defense, Gus Bradley has come in as the Raiders’ new defensive coordinator. The addition of defensive end Yannick Ngakoue and some other pieces (Casey Heyward, rookie safety Trevon Moehrig) will also be very helpful. Simply being average at stopping opponents and getting more takeaways might yield a 10 or 11-win season for the Raiders in 2021.
The Raiders will narrow to their best 53 guys by the end of training camp, and these three players won’t survive camp cuts.

Lawson played in 14 games (starting nine) for the Raiders last year, with a career-high 61 tackles. But he was not particularly impactful otherwise. After being re-signed this offseason, he was suspended for the first two games of the season for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing substance policy.
The Raiders notably added Casey Hayward to their cornerback after he was cut by the Chargers, and they also signed Rasul Douglas in mid-April. They also drafted three defensive backs, though only one (Nate Hobbs) is a cornerback. In June, they added a couple more bodies to the cornerback room (Blidi Wreh-Wilson, De’Vante Bausby).
Lawson is not a good enough player to navigate the depth around him and earn a spot on the 53-man roster. The two-game suspension that looms to start the season will seal his fate quickly as camp goes on.
