By John Buhler
Five-star quarterback Malachi Nelson has trimmed his list to seven teams for his commitment.
With 2023 five-star quarterback Malachi Nelson announcing his high-profile commitment on CBSSports HQ on Sunday, July 18, he has trimmed his list of finalists to seven.
In alphabetical order, the seven teams making the cut for Nelson’s commitment are the Alabama Crimson Tide, Florida State Seminoles, LSU Tigers, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Ohio State Buckeyes, Oklahoma Sooners and USC Trojans.
All 10 247Sports recruiting experts have projected the Los Alamitos, California native to commit to Oklahoma. Once he commits on Sunday, it will set in motion for the rest of the 2023 five-star recruits to do the same thing.
Malachi Nelson 247Sports rankings
According to the 247Sports Composite, Nelson is the No. 1 player from California, the No. 2 quarterback in the country and the No. 5 overall prospect in the 2023 recruiting class. He has 26 official offers but is only seriously considering seven schools at this time.
Malachi Nelson highlights
It would make sense for Nelson to pick Oklahoma. In-state USC is down as a program, while Oklahoma regularly gets its quarterbacks to the Heisman Trophy ceremony, as well as drafted very high once they leave school.
Even if Oklahoma is the heavy favorite to land him, there is a chance one of the other six finalists can shock the Sooners with his commitment.
Nelson is slated to make his commitment on CBSSports HQ at 6:00 p.m. ET on Sunday, July 18.
