Matt Campbell’s remarks at Big 12 Media Days should make Iowa State football fans ecstatic.

Over the last few years, Matt Campbell has made an indelible impact leading the Iowa State football program.

In five years with the Cyclones, Campbell has gone 35-28 overall and 26-19 in Big 12 play. He is a three-time Big 12 Coach of the Year. Campbell and Iowa State are coming off their best season ever. Iowa State went 9-3 overall last year, 8-1 in Big 12 play and won the Fiesta Bowl over the Pac-12 champion Oregon Ducks. Campbell has made it abundantly clear he is not going anywhere.

“I didn’t get into this profession to be somebody,” Campbell said. “I got into this profession to do something.”

Matt Campbell plans to do big things with the Iowa State football program

For the last few years, Campbell has been tied to not just big-level college jobs, but some gigs in the NFL. For him to have Iowa State fighting for New Year’s Six bowls and College Football Playoff berths is nothing short of remarkable. Prior to his arrival in Ames by way of Toledo six years ago, Iowa State was seen as one of the worst programs in the Big 12, alongside lowly Kansas.

What Campbell’s comments at Big 12 Media Days signify is he is more likely to stay put and become Iowa State’s version of Gary Patterson or Bill Snyder than to leave in the middle of the night to lead an underperforming Power Five team.

Of course, it could all change if marquee jobs like Michigan, Penn State or USC open up in the coming offseasons. Would he leave Ames then?

As long as Campbell stays put, Iowa State will remain one of the best programs in the Big 12.
