A few weeks after Bill Moos’ retirement, Nebraska is bringing back legend Trev Alberts to be its new athletic director.

When Bill Moos suddenly retired in late-June, Nebraska entered a search for a new athletic director. On Wednesday morning, the school announced the hiring of Trev Alberts as the new man to lead the athletic department.

“It is such a tremendous honor to have this opportunity to lead Husker athletics,” Alberts said in a statement. “UNL has incredibly talented coaches and student-athletes, and a fan base like no other program in the country. The future of Big Red is bright. I can’t wait to join the Husker athletics team and get going.”

Alberts had been the Director of Athletics at Nebraska-Omaha since 2009, and he was promoted to  Vice Chancellor of Athletics in 2014. The school dropped its football program in 2011. But during Alberts’ tenure the school reclassified as a Division I school, attaining that status during the 2015-16 school year.

Nebraska brings back a legend in Trev Alberts

Alberts is coming back to Lincoln, where he had a legendary career as a Cornhuskers’ player. He won the Butkus Award and the Jack Lambert Trophy in 1993, and he was a consensus first-team All-American that year. He went on to be taken fifth overall in the 1994 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts, but injuries limited him to just three NFL seasons. He then worked as a broadcaster, including three years at ESPN, before landing at Nebraska-Omaha in 2009.

Alberts will be Nebraska’s fourth athletic director since joining the Big Ten in 2011, following Tom Osborne, Shawn Eichorst and Moos.

With a new AD in place, the focus can shift back to head football coach Scott Frost ahead of the 2021 season. A 12-20 over his first three seasons is not what anyone had in mind, and if the results aren’t better in Year 4 Alberts surely won’t hesitate to make a change.
