The 2021 WNBA All-Star Game has a special twist to it. For starters, the league’s All-Stars will be going up against Team USA — as in the squad prepping for the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games. This year, it’ll be about more than just showing off basketball skills while playing half-hearted defense.

The game is sure to be more competitive than usual given the limited time Team USA has on the court together ahead of Tokyo. For the 12 members of Team WNBA, it’s a chance to prove themselves against the most dominant women’s basketball team on the planet. For some, it’s a warmup against a potential opponent at the Olympics. For others, such as Candace Parker and Courtney Vandersloot, it may be an opportunity to showcase why they should have been repping the stars and stripes in the first place.

Hopefully, the Team USA women are more ready for their pre-Olympics competition than the Team USA men, who lost two straight exhibition games to Nigeria and Australia before bouncing back with a win against Argentina Tuesday night. USA Basketball could certainly use some good news this week.

An added bonus to the 2021 WNBA All-Star Game is the fact that legendary hoopers Lisa Leslie and Tina Thompson will be mic’ed up for the entire game as they co-coach Team WNBA. Additionally, the annual 3-point contest will take place at halftime. The competition will feature two-time champion Allie Quigley of the Chicago Sky going against Connecticut Sun forward Jonquel Jones, New York Liberty guard Sami Whitcomb and Seattle Storm guard Jewell Lloyd.
