What would the Knicks have to trade for Damian Lillard?
By John Buhler
The New York Knicks will have to give up the farm to be able to trade for Damian Lillard.
With Portland Trail Blazers star point guard Damian Lillard reportedly planning to request a trade this offseason, one team who would love to deal for him has to be the New York Knicks.
Lillard has been a six-time All-NBA performer and a six-time All-Star during his nine years in the Pacific Northwest. Continued playoff frustrations have contributed to him potentially requesting a trade.
As for the Knicks, they need an upgrade at point guard and are in dire need of some star power to get over the top in a deep Eastern Conference. According to Grant Afseth, the Knicks would be one of Lillard’s preferred destinations in a trade.
What do the Knicks need to trade to get Damian Lillard?
For the Knicks to be able to get Lillard, they have to accept they will be parting ways with three players on their roster.
Former No. 3 overall pick RJ Barrett is likely going to be the centerpiece Portland will want in return for Lillard. In addition, last year’s No. 8 overall pick Obi Toppin could be a part of the trade package
Kevin Knox, Immanuel Quickley and Mitchell Robinson may also be of interest to the Trail Blazers.
Ultimately, it is going to take more than Barrett, Toppin and either Knox, Quickley or Robinson for Portland to agree to this trade. New York may have to give up a first-round pick or two as well. The Knicks have the No. 19 pick this year, as well as the No. 21 pick by way of the Dallas Mavericks. Other future compensation could be included as well. Dealing for Lillard will not come cheap despite him wanting out.
