5 things to watch for on Open Championship weekend: Will Louis Oosthuizen hold on?
4. Is Royal St. George’s going to show its teeth?
Perhaps the biggest question for Louis Oosthuizen and the rest of the field at The Open Championship is what kind of challenge is going to be presented to them by the golf course. Thus far, it hasn’t been the challenge we often see from Royal St. George’s or many other venues in the rota for this championship.
The best example of this is that there were 63 under-par rounds on Friday as the cut was at just 1-over. The 63 rounds are the most ever for a second round at The Open. And for reference, the cut at this course in 2011 was at 3-over and at 8-over back in 2003. Put simply, the conditions have been meager and golfers have taken advantage of that.
As of right now, it doesn’t appear that there is going to be too much of a challenge coming in the way of wind. It could pick up slightly on Saturday but also shouldn’t be downright diabolical either. The only defense that seems sure to come is that we could see the course dry out a bit and give us more links-style runouts that players will have to contend with.
Then again, the weather in Sandwich, Kent, England can turn on a dime, so there is a chance that the wind could come into play. Subsequently, we’ll have to see if Royal St. George’s presents more of a challenge over the final two rounds or if the scoring pace will continue to be historic.
