Red Sox broadcaster calls out Kiké Hernandez for All-Star Break comments

Longtime Red Sox announcer Jerry Remy blasts Kike Hernandez for complaining about the shortened All-Star Break.

The MLB season is entering its second half, and not everyone is excited about it. Boston Red Sox outfielder Kike Hernandez was vocal about his displeasure with the shortened All-Star Break. He mentioned how his team was one of the two teams that didn’t receive four days off. He spoke about the matter unprompted to reporters on July 9.

“I’m obviously not an All-Star, but I definitely feel like we needed a fourth day. For the guys that made the All-Star game, it sucks as much as it’s a privilege for them to be an All-Star. There’s 28 teams that get four days off and two teams that don’t,” Hernandez said per MassLive.com.

Playing in Boston, a city that values grit, hard work, and has another team with a coach with a “no days off” mentality, those comments probably didn’t resonate well with many fans and citizens of the town. One of their former players and longtime announcer blasted the Red Sox player, reminding him of the city’s blue-collar mindset.

If anybody understands the Boston Red Sox and the mentality the city has, it’s Jerry Remy. He played second base for the team from 1978-84 and is now calls games for them on NESN. He had a swift and powerful reaction to Hernandez’s complaints, and he wasn’t trying to hear any of it.

“Kiké is a good player, but he has got to learn to speak in front of Boston people. They want workers they don’t want to hear about extra days off at the All-Star break… Not a good idea. You sound like Adrian Gonzalez,” Remy said per Jason Matrodonato of the Boston Herald.

Yikes, that is not somebody Hernandez wants to be associated with. Boston fans still don’t sleep well from the drama surrounding Gonzalez during his time with the team. However, they are glad they got his and Carl Crawford’s contract off the books when they shipped him to the Dodgers in that blockbuster trade in 2012. Hernandez might want to heed Remy’s advice, as Boston fans are brutal and won’t hold back their emotions towards a player.

The Red Sox begin their second half of the season on Friday against the Yankees. They were scheduled to play Thursday, but a COVID outbreak on the Yankees caused that game to be postponed. Well, Herandez ended up getting that extra day off, didn’t he?
