The 2021 NBA Draft is coming a bit later than previous years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We give the details of when and where it takes place.
Usually, the NBA Draft comes a few days after the conclusion of the NBA Finals.
The same holds true in 2021, but it’s coming a bit later due to the COVID-19 pandemic shifting the season’s start from late October to Christmas.
When is the 2021 NBA Draft and where it is being held?
Instead of the 2021 NBA Draft being held in June, as is custom, it’s coming on Thursday, July 29 at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, NY. It’s going to be quite a night, with one of the better rookie classes in some time entering the Association.
The Detroit Pistons are selecting first, and there’s an expectation of Oklahoma State star Cade Cunningham will be headed to Motown. After that, it’s anybody’s guess to see how things shake out.
Additionally, with the possibility of the Portland Trail Blazers moving on from point guard Damian Lillard, and the Philadelphia 76ers dealing away Ben Simmons, the order could be shaken up something fierce.
Last year, the Minnesota Timberwolves held the top pick and took guard Anthony Edwards. The remainder of the top five was filled out by James Wiseman (Golden State Warriors), LaMelo Ball (Charlotte Hornets), Patrick Williams (Chicago Bulls) and Isaac Okoro (Cleveland Cavaliers).
Once the draft is complete, NBA free agency will begin on Aug. 2 at 6 p.m. ET.
