Middleweight boxers Amilcar Vidal and Immanuwel Aleem set the tone for the Jermell Charlo vs. Brian Castaño fight card from San Antonio, Texas.

Amilcar Vidal and Immanuwel Aleem had a war from the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas, but some questionable scoring gave the fight to Vidal, although many believe Aleem did enough to win.

Vidal (13-0, 11 KOs) was the favorite heading into the fight. The boxer from Uruguay had a perfect record and a 91 percent KO rating, but he looked to be a step behind the busier Aleem on the Jermell Charlo vs. Brian Castaño undercard.

Aleem (18-3-2, 11 KOs) hadn’t fought for more than a year and a half, but he teamed up with famed trainer Ronnie Shields and looked fantastic against Vidal. Vidal had his moments, but they were few and far between.

Aleem started the fight by boxing Vidal and was winning rounds, but by round 4, he stood toe-to-toe with Vidal. That looked like a mistake in round 6 when Vidal almost dropped Aleem with a left hook to the body. Aleem doubled over but never went down.

Amilcar Vidal and Immanuwel Aleem was a close fight on Showtime. Vidal won the boxing bout, but the scorecards were a bit off

Vidal expended a lot of energy in round 6 and looked tired from then on. He still targeted Aleem’s body, but Aleem pushed him back and imposed his physicality.

The fight went the full 10 rounds, and the judges returned scores of 95-95 and two of 97-93 for Vidal giving Vidal the majority decision victory.

Showtime’s Steve Farhood scored the fight 96-94 for Aleem, and Showtime’s online poll favored Aleem by 59 percent.

According to CompuBox statistics, Aleem was the busier fighter throwing 76 more punches than Vidal, but Vidal landed 22 more punches. Vidal was also more accurate, but fights are scored by rounds, not punches landed.

It’s not the result Aleem wanted or possibly deserved, but he showed a lot of heart and that he still has something left in the tank.
