Klay Thompson ready for Warriors to swing big with NBA Draft ‘assets’
By John Buhler
Klay Thompson knows what he wants the Golden State Warriors to do in the 2021 NBA Draft.
As the 2021 NBA Draft approaches, Klay Thompson is hoping the Golden State Warriors swing for the fences with all of their available assets.
Thompson said on Instagram Live earlier this week that he feels great about Golden State having two lottery picks in this year’s draft. He inferred that those type of high-end assets should be used to make a big deal this offseason. Golden State has its own pick at No. 14 and the No. 7 overall pick by way of the Minnesota Timberwolves in the D’Angelo Russell for Andrew Wiggins trade.
Could the Warriors use both of its first-round picks to get Thompson another star teammate?
Klay Thompson likes the draft capital the Golden State Warriors have this year
Though Golden State has two lottery picks, the Warriors’ core is in win-now mode. Thompson, Steph Curry and Draymond Green are all in their early 30s. Golden State has missed out on the NBA Playoffs each of the last two seasons. A big reason for that is Thompson has not played a game for the Warriors since tearing his ACL during the 2019 NBA Finals vs. the Toronto Raptors.
One player who has been tied to the Warriors in a potential blockbuster trade is Portland Trail Blazers point guard Damian Lillard. The Oakland native may be on his way out of the Rose City this summer. If the Warriors were to part ways with both lottery picks, Wiggins and last year’s No. 2 overall pick in center James Wiseman, maybe Thompson, Curry and Green can play with Lillard?
Golden State will be one of the most fascinating teams to watch as the NBA Draft approaches.
