Is Usain Bolt competing in the 2021 Olympics?
Usain Bolt is arguably the greatest sprinter of all time but, after three straight gold medals, will the Jamaican superstar be running at the 2021 Olympics?
Calling Usain Bolt the greatest sprinter to ever hit the track is not hyperbole. The Jamaican athlete wasn’t just dominant in one run at the Olympics but, instead, displayed longevity and versatility (to some degree) that is rarely seen in track and field, particularly as it pertains to sprinting events.
Bolt is the first sprinter in history to win gold medals in both the 100m and 200m events in three consecutive Olympic games, doing so in 2008, 2012 and 2016. For good measure, he also added two additional gold medals as a part of the Jamaican 4x100m relay teams in 2012 and 2016 (their 2008 medal was stripped due to one teammate’s doping offenses).
If that weren’t enough, we’re also talking about the reigning world record holder in both the 100m (9.58 seconds) and 200m (19.19 seconds). Again, anyone questioning the greatness of Usain Bolt simply doesn’t know what they’re talking about. Few athletes in history have been able to provide the thrill he does in 10 (or 20, depending on the event) seconds or less.
The 2021 Olympics in Tokyo are approaching quickly, and you have to wonder if the Jamaican will be back to try for a truly unprecedented fourth gold medal in the 100m and 200m events.
Unfortunately, Usain Bolt will not be competing at the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo
Usain Bolt retired from competitive sprinting in 2017 after competing in the 2017 World Athletics Championships, during which his four-year winning streak in the 100m was broken. He also suffered a hamstring injury in his final race as the anchor of the 4x100m relay team but crossed the finish line under his own power.
Still, that means that the Jamaican star will not be competing at the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo simply because he doesn’t compete anymore at all. Now 34 years old, he will be watching like the rest of fans as the fastest men in the world chase the marks he set back in 2008.
But given how great Bolt was, it’s hard to think his records will come tumbling down anytime soon.
