3 games on the Packers schedule which will define their season
3. Week 16 vs. Cleveland
The Packers get a slight break in Week 16 since they get Cleveland at home. It’s still going to be a high-profile matchup between two teams with legitimate Super Bowl aspirations.
Baker Mayfield may get all the headlines for the Browns heading into the game, but the Packers will be more concerned with stopping Nick Chubb and Cleveland’s ground game. Cleveland’s best chance at stopping Rodgers in this contest is to keep the ball away from him for long stretches of time. Grinding out first down after first down with Chubb is the easiest way for the Browns to make that happen.
Losing a late-season home game to the Browns at Lambeau Field would raise a lot of questions about Green Bay’s form heading into the home stretch. The Packers need to avoid as much drama and uncertainty in the regular season after their tumultuous offseason. Losing at home to the Browns would invite criticism the Packers don’t want to face.
Green Bay doesn’t necessarily need to win this matchup with flair or style, but they need to send a message to Cleveland that they aren’t in the same class as title contenders. Sending Mayfield and company home with a loss of any sort will be sufficient. The Packers just need to get a win in Week 16 and keep motoring on towards the postseason.
