The 2021 Olympics in Tokyo don’t officially begin until Friday’s Opening Ceremonies, but events are already beginning. Here’s what to watch today.

With the specter of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 Olympics (officially 2020) in Tokyo still feel fragile, especially with the official opening still days away. Friday’s Opening Ceremonies will officially open the games but the length of the tournaments from some sports means they have to start ahead of time.

The competition actually begins on Wednesday, July 21 with tournaments for softball and women’s soccer kicking off. The time difference (Tokyo is 13 hours ahead of the Eastern Time Zone) will make for a screwy schedule for Americans looking to watch live but here’s what’s on tap for the first actual day of the 2021 Olympics.

What and how to watch for July 21, the first day of the 2021 Olympics

Softball (all times ET)

Australia vs. Japan — 8:00 p.m. (July 20)
Italy vs. USA — 11:00 p.m. (July 20)
Mexico vs. Canada — 2:00 a.m.

Women’s Soccer (all times ET)

Great Britain vs. Chile — 3:30 a.m.
China vs. Brazil — 4:00 a.m.
Sweden vs. USA — 4:30 a.m.
Japan vs. Canada — 6:30 a.m.
Zambia vs. Netherlands — 7:00 a.m.
Australia vs. New Zealand — 7:30 a.m.

The first game for the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team should be a fantastic watch but 4:30 a.m. is a tough window for a lot of us. If you can’t catch it live, make sure to check back in for a replay later in the day, or just check out the highlights and figure out how to watch some of the other games live.

All of the events at the 2021 Olympics will be available to watch on the NBC family of channels which give you a variety of options for watching on your television or live-streaming events.
