White Sox slugger Yermin Mercedes ends quickest retirement of all-time

After announcing his retirement on Wednesday night, Yermin Mercedes is in uniform for his team’s Triple-A showdown on Thursday. 

Just what in the heck is going on in with Chicago White Sox catcher Yermin Mercedes? It’s been an up and down year for the rookie backstop, as he was demoted earlier this month after a hot start with the club. Mercedes, with Triple-A Durham, announced on Wednesday night that he was retiring.

Well, hold the phone on that. According to the club, Mercedes is in uniform and with Durham for its contest on Thursday. Unreal.

Mercedes clearly is going through some trials and tribulations right now. He’s hit seven homers for the White Sox this season, but none made more headlines than his dinger on a 3-0 count against the Twins.

Things sure started going downhill for him after that, especially after Tony La Russa turned that homer into a media circus, blasting his player for the move. Everyone called out the skipper for blowing things out of proportion. It’s clear that the incident has taken its toll on Mercedes.

For now, the youngster is not retired and will obviously try and work his way back up to the bigs to make plays in the Windy City. However, he’s got to get his mental mindset right before doing so. Again, it looks like this retirement was a short one. We’ll see how things pan out for Mercedes moving forward.
