Cleveland Indians reveal new nickname with the help of Tom HanksThe Cleveland Indians have officially revealed what the franchise’s new nickname will be.

The wait is over, we finally know what the Cleveland Indians will be rebranded as at the start of the next season.

After years of backlash mounted against the Cleveland nickname, the organization officially decided to ditch its current team name for one that was less offensive and racially insensitive.

For years, Indian tribes have protested against the use of ‘Indians’ as the team name in Cleveland. The franchise went to certain lengths to try and combat the use of racist imagery associated with the team, from banning the use of headdresses at the stadium to removing the team’s Chief Wahoo logo from its rotation.

Now the team has taken the final step in distancing itself from the Indians team name up revealing what the new nickname will be moving forward.

Tom Hanks Cleveland Guardians hype video

The Cleveland franchise officially rebranded itself on Friday, revealing that the new team name will be the Cleveland Guardians.

The team enlisted the help of Tom Hanks and The Black Keys to both soothingly transition fans to the new name as well as hyping up Guardians with some rock and roll music.

It was rather hilarious timing for a club that simply refused to change its racist name for years, even after the backlash had grown exponentially. Cleveland waited until the middle of the Olympic Opening ceremony to news dump its new nickname, which hopefully isn’t a sign of how the organization feels about the new name.

Cleveland will remain the Indians for the remainder of the 2021 season, but will come out with new merchandise and the new rebrand next season.
