MLB Rumors: Twins engaged in Jose Berrios trade talks with two NL contenders
By Josh Hill
It’s MLB Trade Rumors season, and the Twins have begun the process of auctioning of Jose Berrios to two high-bidding National League contenders
With the MLB Trade Rumors winds blowing harder and harder, it’s a reminder that the deadline is controlled and operated by bad teams with big players. While some teams like the Cubs, Nationals, and Yankees are spending this week officially determining whether they will be buyers or sellers, the Minnesota Twins have fully embraced how terrible they are and are waving the white flag like it’s a Homer Hankie.
Hey, at least the Twins can win at something this year, even if it’s being so bad they control a ton of trade chips at the deadline.
One of the most valuable chips the Twins hold is starter Jose Berrios. What began as rumblings that Minnesota might move its ace have become full-throated shouts from the auction podium. Berrios is going to be traded, it’s just a matter of who ends up with the Cy Young candidate when the dust settles.
Jose Berrios trade rumors: Twins engaged in talks with multiple teams
According to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, the list of teams hot after Berrios is emerging. According to the latest update, the Twins are engaged in trade talks surrounding Jose Berrios with the Dodgers and Padres among the top bidders.
The Dodgers and Padres getting goaded into a bidding war by the Twins is the This Is How I Win meme come to life. But while the Twins end of things will be shortlived, there’s a sense of urgency for contending teams in need of pitching to get Minnesota an offer it can’t refuse — or that another team can’t one-up.
Berrios has been connected to the New York Mets, and despite trading for Rich Hill they still could make a move. Ditto the St. Louis Cardinals, who made a deal for T.J. Zeuch this weekend but would be foolish to not consider a Berrios trade at the right price.
That price is key, however. St. Louis and New York being in on Berrios makes sense in theory, but the Dodgers and Padres getting involved will only jack the price up.
