Jon Gruden’s legacy as a Great Coach was cemented when he inherited someone else’s iconic team.

It was 20 years ago that Gruden waltzed into Tampa Bay and picked up Tony Dungy’s roster like the morning paper. The end result was a Super Bowl victory, and two decades later he’s in a position to once again inherit greatness that will rub off on his legacy.

Rodgers in Vegas is the type of thing that looks great on paper — or, in the case of The Strip, in bright blinking glitzy lights. The illumination in the desert would be unlike anything the Raiders have experienced since that aforementioned Super Bowl, in which Gruden pummeled his old team. In the twenty seasons that have unfolded since 2002, the Raiders have made it back to the playoffs exactly once and lost to a backup Houston Texans quarterback when they got there.

There would need to be significant work done to the roster to get it up to snuff, which is a major roadblock in the Raiders beating out other teams that would have an interest. But if the Raiders, who won an analytics award for the gymnastics of the Khalil Mack trade, can find a way to turn on the faucet and spend their way to a Super Bowl the game will have changed.

The most interesting part about Rodgers in Vegas is the narrative it presents. The Raiders-Chiefs rivalry will have instantly been restored to a level not seen since the heyday of both franchises decades ago. Gruden winning another Super Bowl would make it impossible to not talk about him with the all-time greats, even if it felt dirty anytime we brought it up. Patrick Mahomes finally getting rid of Tom Brady only to have Aaron Rodgers come to his division would be an all-time WWE-style showstopping plot twist.

Of the teams that Rodgers could sign with in 2022, the Raiders are the hardest to fathom. But they’ll be right in the thick of the rumors so just get on board now and roll with the punches.
