2021 Olympics medal count, July 27: Which athletes and countries have the most medals?
By Ian Levy
The United States has won a slew of medals and taken the top spot from the People’s Republic of China for the 2021 Olympics medal count leaderboard.
The United States lost out on two high-profile gold medals with the softball team dropping the gold medal game to Japan in a 2-0 loss. In gymnastics, Simone Biles withdrew from the team competition and, despite a late push, Team USA couldn’t catch Russia. Both were events the United States was expected to win gold in and coming up short definitely stings.
However, the US picked up a pile of gold medals in shooting and swimming events, among others, to pass the People’s Republic of China for the top spot. Japan and Russia are tied for third with 18 total medals each, with Great Britain rounding out the top five.
In terms of gold medals, the host country Japan still leads all countries with 10. The US and the People’s Republic of China are tied with nine each. We are still early in the 2021 Olympics and there is plenty of time for things to change on the medal count leaderboard. But right now, Team USA has to feel terrific about what they’ve been able to accomplish.
