The United States has won a slew of medals and taken the top spot from the People’s Republic of China for the 2021 Olympics medal count leaderboard.

Team USA picked up a handful of additional gold medals today, including in the inaugural women’s 3×3 basketball tournament and with Katie Ledecky returning to dominance in the 1500m freestyle. The US still holds a four-medal lead over the People’s Republic of China on the overall medal leaderboard with both countries continuing to separate themselves from Russia, Japan and Great Britain in the top five.

In terms of just gold medals, host country Japan is in the lead with 13. The People’s Republic of China (12), Team USA (11), ROC (7) and Australia (6) round out the top five on that board. With medal events coming up tomorrow in gymnastics and swimming, among others, the United States has an excellent chance to continue building on its lead.
