New Orleans Pelicans center and former Texas basketball standout Jaxson Hayes was arrested on Wednesday after getting into a violent altercation with some Los Angeles area police officers.
Hayes and a policer officer had to be taken to a Los Angeles area hospital after a domestic disturbance incident became violent. While Hayes’ injuries were considered minor, the officer involved in the fight’s condition remains unknown. Hayes recently turned 21-years-old. He was drafted No. 8 overall by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2019 NBA Draft out of Texas. His draft rights were traded to New Orleans in the deal that brought veteran forward Solomon Hill and De’Andre Hunter’s draft rights to Atlanta. Hayes has played in 124 games over the last two seasons for the Pelicans after going one-and-done with Texas.
Hayes is expected to be charged with felony battery by the police officer. While the Los Angeles Police Department is still investigating the matter surrounding the domestic dispute that brought them to the Los Angeles area residence in the first place, both parties have been uncooperative. Hayes had his team option for 2021-22 exercised by the Pelicans front office on Dec. 18, 2020.
