Look: Patrick Mahomes reacts to his autographed rookie card selling for record sum
By John Buhler
Patrick Mahomes cannot believe how much his autographed Kansas City Chiefs rookie card sold for in an auction in late July.
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes‘ autographed rookie card is now the most expensive NFL rookie card ever sold in an auction.
His one-of-one National Treasures Autographed Rookie Card sold for $4.3 million, breaking a Tom Brady rookie card from when he was with the New England Patriots that sold for $3.1 million in March 2021. It may be a one-of-one collector’s item, but this is an absurd amount of disposable income to throw at an autographed card. Even Mahomes cannot believe what the card sold for.
Here is his reaction to the card in question by way of his quote tweet from Wednesday morning.

What is mind-blowing with this trading card transaction is Mahomes is only entering his fifth NFL season out of Texas Tech. Is he already a lock for the Pro Football Hall of Fame? One could certainly argue that, but he has yet to play his age-26 season. Conversely, Brady is entering his 22nd season out of Michigan, his second with the Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Should Mahomes approach a similar level of team success as Brady, this one-of-a-kind autographed rookie card could be worth eight figures by the time he hangs up the spikes. Again, anything is worth what somebody is willing to pay for it. For one individual, a Patrick Mahomes autographed rookie card is worth $4.3 million. Many NFL players will not make that this season.
If this deal does not reset the trading card market, then what sort of card would do that, honestly?
