Anthony Rizzo is headed to the New York Yankees, a trade that created a mix of emotions on all sides of fandom.
As the MLB Trade Deadline quickly approaches, the Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees are wasting absolutely no time.
The Cubs still have a handful of valuable trade chips they can flip as part of an inevitable rebuild, but they no longer hold one for Anthony Rizzo. The Cubs legend, who will no doubt have a statue erected in his honor outside of Wrigley Field one day, was traded to the New York Yankees on Thursday night.
It was an unceremonious end to his time on the North Side. Rizzo was held out of the Cubs lineup on Thursday and was not allowed a chance to pinch-hit and say farewell to Cubs fans.
The trade sent shockwaves throughout all of MLB Twitter, as it wasn’t just Cubs or Yankees fans tweeting through the moment.
MLB fans react to Anthony Rizzo Yankees trade
Let’s get the obvious reaction out of the way: Cubs fans were devastated. Not only was Anthony Rizzo traded, but of all the teams he could go to it ended up being the Yankees.
NOT THE YANKEES

And the Cubs never officially made Anthony Rizzo captain

Not exactly groundbreaking stuff from me here but moving Rizzo (and probably Bryant) is incredibly lame shit and the Ricketts should never stop hearing about it from Cubs fans.

Rizzo not getting in the game today for a final goodbye is a 10/10 on the That Cannot Happen scale

Rizzo to the Yankees 🤮

Yankees fans, on the other hand, were beyond thrilled. Not only was New York acquiring one of the best first baseman in baseball, but in doing so they had blocked the Boston Red Sox from acquiring him.
The #Yankees have traded for INF/OF Joey Gallo & 1B Anthony Rizzo in a matter of 24 hours. Those two players are extremely well-liked, fun clubhouse guys.

DUDE!!! The Yankees got Rizzo and Gallo for almost nothing AND the Cubs and Rangers are paying their salaries for this year.

Shit is magic!! Now go get another pitcher and we're in business.

Even if the sum total of the Anthony Rizzo trade is "adding a great clubhouse fit for two months while blocking the Red Sox"...I'm down, baby! Down!!

Folks also pointed out how the Yankees biggest need is pitching, yet they went back-to-back unloading prospects for hitters.

Same Yankee song and dance. First comes the excitement then comes the disappointment when you can’t compete in October because there’s not enough pitching. More “names” “stars” other teams don’t want. The word is out, the Yankees will take all the cheap power.

nvm guess the Yankees did get some pitching after all https://t.co/QlvN7AuXrQ

These moves the Yankees are making, especially getting Rizzo, are absolutely fantastic but the pitching staff is DREADFUL and that needs to be addressed. Offense is great but nothing will improve without fixing the rotation.
