Losers from the Dodgers-Nationals trade for Max Scherzer and Trea Turner

The Padres

What a way to have the rug pulled out from under you …

At lunchtime in San Diego, it looked like Scherzer was heading to the Padres. By evening, Scherzer was heading for their neighbors to the north.

The Padres have a 7-3 lead over the Dodgers in the season series, but you might as well put an extra L in that record given what LA just pulled off.

The Dodgers’ future

If the Dodgers win a World Series with Scherzer and Turner, trading away four prospects, including the top two in the farm, will seem very worth it. However, the chickens will eventually come home to roost on that one.

You can’t trade away your top two prospects without it impacting your future. LA has accepted that reality now, but it’s going to hurt later.

Nationals fans

Two years ago, Nationals fans were on the top of the world, having just won the World Series. Now, their roster has been gutted and their two best players are gone.

It’s all well and good from a franchise perspective to pick up prospects. The future health of the organization is assured. That’s a comfort, at least. The thing is, prospects aren’t going to make Nationals games very entertaining this season.

Washington fans are the ones who have to watch this stripped-down roster for the rest of the year and beyond.
