Mets get brutal Jacob deGrom injury update
By Scott Rogust
Following the trade for Javier Baez, the New York Mets fanbase received the brutal update on the status of ace pitcher Jacob deGrom.
The New York Mets were in the news on Friday after they pulled off a huge trade with the Chicago Cubs, landing Javier Baez and pitcher Trevor Williams in exchange for top outfield prospect Pete Crow-Armstrong. Not only that, but they brought back their beloved black uniforms on Friday. However, the fanbase received a brutal update on the status of ace pitcher Jacob deGrom.
The Mets plan to shut down deGrom for two weeks after he experienced additional inflammation in his right arm after throwing a bullpen session on Thursday, per MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo. With that, deGrom is now likely to be on the sidelined until September.
Mets: Jacob deGrom likely out until September with right arm inflammation
This is not the news that Mets fans wanted to hear, especially when they thought of the team’s addition of Baez to the middle infield.
Even though deGrom enjoyed success on the mound this season, he has dealt with a variety of injuries besides his right arm ailment. He has dealt with right side tightness, right shoulder soreness and a right lat inflammation this campaign, but he had missed minimal time.
Through 15 starts, deGrom recorded a 1.08 ERA, a 0.554 WHIP, 146 strikeouts and 11 walks in 92.0 innings of work.
The Mets prepared to address the starting rotation ahead of the trade deadline, especially with deGrom out injured. The Mets were interested in Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer, but he would not accept a trade to New York. They were also in on Minnesota Twins starter Jose Berrios, but he was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays. However, they did get some insurance in the form of Williams in the Cubs trade on Friday, in addition to acquiring Rich Hill from the Tampa Bay Rays last week.
Either way, the Mets will have to go without deGrom until September, as they contend with the Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves for first place in the NL East.
