3 pitchers Yankees must add after Anthony Rizzo and Joey Gallo trades
By John Buhler
Kyle Gibson is in the midst of the best year of his career for the Texas Rangers
New York has already been able to strike up a big deal with the Texas Rangers for Gallo, so why not see if the Yankees can orchestrate a trade for their All-Star right-handed pitcher in Kyle Gibson? The 33-year-old is 6-3 on the season with 2.87 ERA in 17 starts for Texas. He has a 1.177 WHIP, 94 strikeouts and 41 walks in 113 innings pitched for the lowly Rangers as well.
While there are other bigger name pitchers potentially on the block, Gibson offers high-level productivity now, as well as some flexibility heading into next season. Gibson signed a three-year deal with the Rangers after spending his entire professional career with the Minnesota Twins prior to 2020. He is under contract for next season and will not be hitting free agency until winter 2023.
Overall, the Yankees could improve their rotation by adding a pitcher at the peak of his value who is in the midst of a career year. Of course, he could regress under the bright lights of New York City. Since his value is so high, as well as being under contract for another season, the Yankees will have to give up more than they bargained for to land a starting pitcher of Gibson’s caliber today.
By trading for Gibson, the Yankees are banking on him pitching like this for the rest of the season.
