Yankees add insurance to their rotation with southpaw Andrew Heaney
While it remains to be seen how much of an impact left-handed starter Andrew Heaney will make in the Yankees rotation, he at the very least gives New York some insurance in that department. The longtime Los Angeles Angels southpaw came over in a deadline deal from the Halos on Friday. He will make his Yankees debut at some point in the next few days. So what about his impact?
Heaney is not going to overtake Gerrit Cole atop the Yankees rotation, or anything patently absurd like that. He will likely be a back-end of the rotation guy for them in the second half of the season. On the year, he is 6-7 in 18 starts over 94 innings. While his ERA is not great at 5.27, he does have 113 strikeouts on the year to only 31 bases on balls. Control will be big for him in The Bronx now.
As with any starting pitcher on the Yankees, Heaney will be scrutinized every fifth day he toes the rubber. Again, trading for him is about potentially elevating the back-end of their rotation. If he pitches well, then that will help the Yankees get back into the AL East race, or reassert themselves for one of two AL Wild Card spots. If he struggles, the Yankees will probably miss the postseason.
Overall, Heaney will be the more impactful new Yankees pitcher over Holmes because of his role.
