Lakers trying to ‘get the band back together’ after Dwight Howard signing
By Scott Rogust
The Los Angeles Lakers are looking at signing two players from their 2019-20 NBA championship team.
The negotiating window for NBA free agency has officially opened up on Monday evening, and signings are being announced at the blink of an eye. For the Los Angeles Lakers, they made their big splash move in acquiring Washington Wizards guard Russell Westbrook in a trade. With so much money devoted to their big-three in Westbrook, LeBron James and Anthony Davis, how will they fill out their roster? Apparently, they plan on reuniting with some members of the 2020 NBA championship team.
According to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports, the Lakers “kinda want to get the band back together,” and are pursuing guard Danny Green and center Dwight Howard.
Lakers reportedly pursuing Danny Green and Dwight Howard in free agency
It never hurts to bring back some players from your championship-winning team. Luckily for the Lakers, the likes of Howard and Green will be relatively affordable.
Green was one of Los Angeles’ huge acquisitions in the summer of 2019, signing a two-year, $30 million contract. Right after he hoisted the Larry O’Brien trophy for the second-consecutive year, Green was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder for guard Dennis Schroder, and then flipped to the Philadelphia 76ers.
Through 69 games with the76ers this past season, Green averaged 9.5 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.7 assists while shooting 41.2-percent from the field and 40.5-percent from the three-point line.
As for Howard, it appeared as though he was leaning towards re-signing with the Lakers. He went as far to announce that he was doing so. Yet, the veteran big man opted to sign a one-year deal with the 76ers.
In 69 regular-season games with the 76ers, Howard averaged 7.0 points and 8.4 rebounds while shooting 58.7-percent from the field.
The Lakers planned on running it back this past season, but the roster overhaul they had, paired with injuries, resulted in a first-round exit to the Phoenix Suns. Now, it appears they are looking to reuniting with some of their NBA championship team members. It remains to be seen if they can get deals done with Howard and Green to make that come to fruition.
