Football is back! Sort of. The Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers face off in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio on Thursday night.

A fair warning to all fans watching on Thursday — to call the Hall of Fame Game a professional football contest might not be fair to the highest level of greatness that Canton offers. Neither Dak Prescott nor Ben Roethlisberger will play, and a number of starters will be missing.

And frankly, that’s how it should be. The number of stars injured in the preseason over the years suggests forcing starters to put in significant minutes in games that do not count isn’t a wise decision.

Roethlisberger is coming off a solid season that was derailed in the latter third. Pittsburgh started 11-0, but lost five of their final six games, including a home playoff contest to the Cleveland Browns. Serious questions have emerged as to how much Big Ben has left to give.

Prescott, meanwhile, broke his angle early last year, essentially ending the Cowboys season in the process. Andy Dalton was a decent replacement, but could not lead Dallas to the playoffs in the worst division in all of football.
