2021 Olympics women’s basketball gold medal game: How to watch online
The women’s Olympic basketball tournament is set to conclude as the United States aims to win its seventh straight gold medal against Japan.
While most of the attention on the Olympic basketball stage focuses on the United States’ men’s national team, the women’s squad has been much more dominant over the years. The United States’ women’s basketball team has won a gold medal in six consecutive Olympic games and is looking to extend their streak to seven golds with a win tonight.
Team USA has gone undefeated in Tokyo, winning all three of their group stage games before blowing out Australia and Serbia to earn a spot in the gold medal game. Brittney Griner was the star for the Americans in their 79-59 win over Serbia, scoring a team-high 15 points and grabbing a team-high 12 rebounds in the dominant win.
Next up in the gold medal game will be Japan, which has done well to earn a medal in basketball for the first time in its history. Japan squeaked by Belgium in an 86-85 victory in the quarterfinals before beating France by 16 points to advance to the gold medal game, where they will be heavy underdogs against the United States.
These two teams have already met once in the Olympic basketball tournament as members of Group B, with Team USA securing an 86-69 victory over the host nation. A’ja Wilson led the way with 20 points for the Americans while Breanna Stewart contributed 13 rebounds to the win.
It has been a long time since Team USA lost an international game, racking up 54 straight victories in a run that dates back to the 1992 Barcelona games, which happened to be the last time that the United States didn’t claim the gold medal in women’s basketball. It would take a huge upset to see that streak broken here by Japan.
