Should Eagles fans be worried about Jalen Hurts?
By Mark Powell
The Philadelphia Eagles went all-in on Jalen Hurts, but did they show their cards too soon? Hurts is struggling mightily in training camp.
The Oklahoma product was a second-round pick of the Eagles towards the tail end of the Carson Wentz era. After providing flashes at the end of the 2020 season, the Eagles liked what they saw enough to give Hurts a chance at the full-time starter role entering 2021.
With an offense built around his strength, the pressure is now on Hurts to prove the Eagles right. Should he fail, and the Eagles struggle as a result, he’ll surely be replaced in short order come next year’s NFL Draft.
In training camp so far, Hurts is not performing up to par.
Philadelphia Eagles: Time to worry about Jalen Hurts?
Eh…not so fast. The Philadelphia Inquirer’s EJ Smith puts it best in his camp recap:
"“It’s not time to sound the alarm just yet, of course. It’s only fair to point out the second-year quarterback is without his top receiver, first-round rookie DeVonta Smith as he recovers from a sprained MCL. John Hightower, the team’s fifth-round pick in last year’s draft, went on the injury report Saturday with a groin injury that’s considered week-to-week. Jalen Reagor and Quez Watkins were in the lineup Saturday, but both missed some time early in camp.”"
Hurts is still a young player, going through his first training camp as a full-time NFL starter. The majority of his top weapons on the outside are missing due to injury. Without DeVonta Smith and Jalen Reagor, it’s impossible to know how Hurts will perform when the Eagles offense is at their best.
Sure, every NFL team deals with injuries throughout the season, but it’s impossible to blame the second-year QB Hurts for playing a little under par thus far.
