During Saturday night’s preseason opener against the Texans, these three Green Bay Packers clinched a roster spot.

With the reduction to three preseason games in the NFL this year, the first preseason game takes on slightly greater importance in battles for roster spots. For the Green Bay Packers in their preseason opener against the Houston Texans, a 26-7 loss for what it’s worth, those battles for roster spots were not headline material as quarterback Jordan Love made his NFL debut

Love (12-for-17 for 122 yards, one touchdown) looked fine considering he hadn’t played in so long and hadn’t taken an NFL snap, and he has a roster spot secure as Aaron Rodgers’ backup. The Packers rested most of their recognizable names against Houston, so there were opportunities for others to make some hay.

It was only the first preseason game, but these three Packers clinched a roster spot with their showing against the Texans.

3. S Vernon Scott

As the Packers seek safety depth behind Darnell Savage and Adrian Amos, and with Will Redmond out, Scott, Henry Black and Innis Gaines had opportunities to shine–and all three did in some respect.

But Scott looked good against the run and in coverage against the Texans, finishing second on the team in tackles with six (four solo) along with a nice diving pass breakup to prevent a touchdown.

Scott saw most of his action on special teams as a rookie last year (184 snaps, vs. 89 defensive snaps). On Saturday night, he stated his case for a spot as a nickel safety who can be far more than a special teamer.
